B is for Birthdays

March is Birthday month for both Justin and I. The weekend before our birthday's we had a party at 1,000 springs. Its a local hot springs pool. Justin had a great time swimming with all his nieces and nephews, while I spent the day chatting with the grown-ups.

This year we spent the week in between our birthdays with Justin's Sister and his nieces. His sister Jackie came up from Utah to see us and the rest of the family. While she was here they decided to remodel his parents bathroom. It was suppose to be a day project but ended up taking four days. All is all it looks great. I spent the time hanging out with my niece Danielle (who's 18th birthday was also that week). We went shopping, to the movies, had a One Tree Hill marathon, played Guitar Hero and went out for breakfast.

We have had a great time getting to know Brock these last few weeks. So far he loves to cuddle and be held, lay on his tummy, eat and make funny noises. He has found his lungs and knows how to use them but only does so when he's really hungry (about every 2-3 hours) but he makes lots of other noises too. My favorite one kinda sounds like a cross between a goat and a evil laugh.

In other news we are both recovering nicely and have enjoyed having lots of visitors come to see us. Everyone who comes and even those who haven't made it yet ask me who he looks like. I think he looks like the gorringe boys, especially Justin's dad and I don't think that he looks at all like me. So here are some pictures of him with the family so you can see what you think.

He is changing so much its hard to tell, he is almost to tall to fit into his newborn outfits. His eyes are light on the inside and a dark blue on the outside, he still has long arms and legs. His hair is a light brown. His face and body are filling out more and he is starting to get roles under his chin. He is still the most kissable baby I have ever known and we love him dearly.

Delivery

Tuesday morning I woke up at around three thirty in the morning, like every other morning to go the bathroom. After I got back in bed I had my first real contrition, I was not a fan. After that they came regularly about five minutes apart, on my third contraction my water broke. I decided that it was time to go to the hospital. We got to the hospital around four thirty. We checked in, they checked my progress and I was three cm dilated and 50% effaced. They checked the fluid and sure enough my water had broken so I got to stay. The nurse said I couldn’t have an epidural until I started showing progress. I decided to try and encourage this progress by walking around. An hour later I was four cm and the epidural was ordered. By seven thirty the epidural was in and I was happy. I slept on and off for the next four hours. I was only awaken by nurse coming to check on us and when the baby’s heart rate dropped. It dropped twice and they ended up putting in a scalp electrode so that they could monitor the heart rate more accurately. By eleven thirty I was dilated to a nine and almost completely effaced. Around twelve thirty I started pushing. And I pushed and pushed and pushed and not much was happening. My parents got there at around one forty five. At around two they decided to start me on pitocin to help me progress. I pushed more, nothing. By around three thirty the doctor came to check on me, he told me that I was not progressing, and that I had three options. One, he could perform a C-section, two I could try for a little longer, three he could help the baby come out with either the use of a vacuum or the forceps. He recommended using the forceps so that’s what we did. After everything was set up, it took five pushed to get him out. Justin did very well, his job was to tell everyone if it was a boy or a girl. Because I had been pushing for so long and the fact that his heart rate had been dropping and they had to use forceps the NICU nurses had to be there. Dr. Packem is fairly new to the area and is one of the only doctors who is trained in forcep deliveries, so some of the nurses wanted to watch which was fine by me, I wanted to watch too but I was a little busy. Brock was born at 4:07pm, he had the cord wrapped around his neck which is why his heart rate kept dropping and he wouldn’t come out on his own. He was a little blue at first but he pinked right up. His apgar was an 8, so the NICU nurses didn’t have to stay long. We stayed for a day at the hospital. He was 7 pounds 5 oz, and 20 in long.
It was hard for me being in the hospital as a patient. I sometimes have dreams of call lights going off all night, and that night they were really going off all night. Luckily I got the VIP room because I work at the hospital. The nurses I worked with on peds came down and decorated the room and stopped by to say hi. The nurse who was on that night is a girl who I went to school with at BYU-I. She was in my group on my humanities tour when we spent a month in Europe. She was great and made me a hand mold and footprints. Over all it went fine, it was a little scary at times but I was glad that I didn’t have to have a c-section and that my parents were able to be there for the birth. He is a good baby, he is eating well and sleeps great, plus he is pretty dang cute. He has long arms, legs, fingers and toes. I am not sure who he looks like, we will just have to wait and see.

Halloween

I love pumkins! When we went to Grandma's a few weeks ago she gave some pumpkins. We took three, one for me, one for Justin and one for the baby. Justin decided that we needed to carve our pumpkins this year so that I would through them away after halloween. Last year mine lasted until January. So for one of our FHE activities we carved pumpkins. They all turned out great but they didn't last until Halloween.

Mine is a monster, the little one is a face and Jusitn's is a spider.

It was ok that they didn't last. We went to our friends Trunk or Treat/ward party. I helped hand out candy and Justin took the kids around to get candy. Justin didn't really care to dress up but we made him anyway. He was a hot dog vender, which he was ok with because he got to have hot dogs as part of his costume, but then he ate them so we didn't get any pictures of his outfit. My friend Emily and I dressed up as the swine flu. We thought we were pretty funny and the bishop of her ward even talked about us in church the next day. We then went to Jess's house and watched movies and ate more candy and treats.

In other news, the baby is doing well. I have started feeling it move. It like to jump around, especially on my bladder. Justin tells me I am getting bigger everyday and he doesn't believe me that the baby is only about a pound and will hopefully gain several more. We had another ultrasound and I decide that the baby was going to be a skeloten for halloween. Here is the ultrasound picture it is just the face and part of the chest.

Fall

It is starting to feel like fall, we finally turned off the air conditioner and have been able to open the windows in the evening. We have been enjoying the cooler weather and everything else that comes with fall, including Hunting. Justin and his friend Von spent a weekend hunting up in the Ruby mountains in northern Nevada. The saw lots of doe but very few Bucks.

While Justin was out playing hunter, I stayed home and my Parent came down to play. We did lots of shopping and looking at baby stuff. We even bought the first articles of clothing for unborn Gorringe. As many of you know, we are NOT going to find out the sex of the baby. Which is exciting but makes it difficult to buy clothes for the baby. (I started a poll so take your guess)

So baby has at least one outfit to wear. I also made sure that Mom knows where all the baby stores are for future visits. We went to the BYU vs. UNLV football game. It was my first ever college football game. We also went out for almost every meal and had lots and lots of cheesecake from the cheesecake factory, we especially like the pumpkin cheesecake.

Justin on the other hand did not eat as well, we did save him some leftovers. They didn't getting anything on their hunt. This however did not discourage Justin and he decided that he needed to try again.

This last weekend Michele and Caleb stopped by for a visit. She brought me some of here baby stuff, car seat, bassinet, swing and bouncer. So the baby now not only has an outfit but can come home from the hospital and has a place to sleep. We even started cleaning out the office to make room for the baby stuff. Michele and Caleb then left for Disneyland and we headed out to Beaver. Justin talked my uncle Jimmy into taking him hunting and with in three hours of actual hunting they had a deer! He has fun with Jimmy and his boys, my cousins. I on the other hand chose not to wake up at three in the morning and went shopping with Grandma, Aunt Cindy and RaCail. We ran some errands and had lunch at Cafe Rio, also a first for me. I then spent the rest of the time helping Grandma with the computer and doing genealogy stuff for Mom. We love going to Beaver, spending time with the family and getting away from Vegas. They actually have fall leaves and colors in Utah.

The Savage

For FHE this month we had a drive in movie night. Each couple was given the task of designing a car out of a box to sit in while we watched a movie in our friends back yard with the help of a video projector. Being as difficult as we are we decided to make an airplane instead and we certainly did enjoy our in flight movie. Here are some pictures of the Savage.
